He Just… Is

You and I began one day.

The same can be said for everyone we’ve ever known, and everyone they’ve ever known. It’s no different when we look outside humanity: animals, plants, and the universe all had a starting point.

Everything had a beginning.

Almost everything.

There is One who stands outside of everything else, for whom the beginning means something different.

“In the beginning, God.” (Genesis 1:1)

Whenever the beginning was—13.8 billion years ago or otherwise—God was already there. This means he is not contingent upon anything that has a beginning. He stands outside of it all as the one responsible for its existence.

This is difficult to come to grips with because it’s entirely foreign to our reality. All of us are dependent upon something else for our existence. Not so for God.

He just… is.
